NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA PIEDAD¨S SANCTUARY
The Sanctuary of ‘Nuestra Señora de la Piedad’ is located at the top of the ‘Parque de la Piedad’ and has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the 16th century. The original image of ‘Nuestra Señora del Piedad’, who is the saint patron of the town, is located in a side niche of the nave.
The Sanctuary of ‘Nuestra Señora de la Piedad’ is located at the top of the ‘Parque de la Piedad’ and has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the 16th century, when the image of ‘Nuestra Señora de la Piedad’ was found in that place by a farmer. There is no document that can prove this story.
The original appearance of the chapel is unknown due to it has undergone several transformations over the centuries to its current appearance. It has a simple style and a small size. It has a whitewashed façade and a belfry. The porticoed access has three half-point openings. The temple has a Latin cross plan covered by a starred ribbed vault. Its presbytery is covered by a half-sphere dome with painted wall.
It also has three Baroque style altarpieces from the 18th century, carved and gilded by Isidro Bayón, from Fuente del Maestre. It also has an organ located in a choir which was donated by the Marquises of the Colony in 1926 with 602 sound tubes made of tin and a mahogany wooden box. There is also a processional throne made by Herrera and Feria. In the same way it is worth mentioning the tile work of Pedro de Navia, who gives a peculiar image to the temple.
The original image of ‘Nuestra Señora del Piedad’, who is the saint patron of the town, is located in a side niche of the nave. The image is made of polychrome stone. It has 60 centimetres high and weighs 83 kilos. She has been the Saint Patron of Almendralejo since 1657 and has been recognised as the perpetual mayor since 1987.
