MARQUIS OF LA ENCOMIENDA PALACE HOUSE
MARQUIS OF LA ENCOMIENDA PALACE HOUSE
The Marquis of the Encomienda Palace House was built in the second half of the 18th century and is one of the most outstanding civil houses in the city. It consists of two floors and a central courtyard from which all the rooms are distributed. Its state of conservation is exceptional, thanks to the family members who have inhabited it since its construction.
The palace was commissioned by the Marquises of the Encomienda, who had been living until then in the palace that was the old town hall. The building was constructed in the second half of the 18th century and by the end of the same century, the family was already living in it and it has belonged to this family ever since.
The palace occupies a large area of land, it is in the Baroque style and it is made of masonry and plastered brick. The building has a main axis, which is the central courtyard and all the main rooms of the house are distributed around it, while the service rooms are located around an interior courtyard.
The facade is characterized by being very symmetrical, with two well-defined floors separated by a string course; on the first floor, the portico stands out, made of linteled marble with decorative moldings.
On the second floor, the central balcony stands out, flanked by two pilasters adorned with relief floral motifs, and on each side of this balcony, there are carved stone shields displaying the family's coat of arms.
From the main door, you access the interior; first, you come across a large covered vestibule with a groined vault and then, passing through a heavy iron grille, you reach the rectangular-shaped patio with two floors and semi-circular arches. On the ground floor, the arches rest on Tuscan marble columns, and on the upper floor, they rest on granite columns. The patio was renovated in the late 19th century, with a lower level adorned with Andalusian-style tiles that runs along the first floor.
On the main façade, there is a plaque reminding us that Colonel Francisco Fernández Golfín was born in this palace.
The building is privately owned, so only the exterior façade can be seen.
