JUAN JOSÉ NIETO AGUILAR, II MARQUIS OF MONSALUD

Knight of the Order of Santiago in 1801, when he was a Colonel of the Queen's Hussars Regiment. He participated in the War of Independence. Twice a deputy for Extremadura. He was born in 1769 and died in Almendralejo in 1851, where he had been born. It is important to highlight that thanks to his efforts, the Royal Academy of History acquired the famous Missorium of Theodosius.

Son of Juan Nieto Domonte and Golfín, the 1st Marquis of Monsalud. A distinguished military officer, in June 1808, he resisted the French invasion in the town of Almendralejo, leading a motley troop of militias and civilians, and the Junta of Extremadura rewarded his services with promotion to Field Marshal and Lieutenant General, as well as the appointment as inspector of all troops in Extremadura (Commander General of Badajoz, and Captain General of Extremadura).

After the war concluded in 1814, on March 6, 1816, he was appointed as the first chamberlain of the infant Don Carlos, the Supreme General of the Royal Armies, and in the same year, he was elected as an honorary academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

Upon the return of absolutism, King Fernando VII imprisoned him for several months in Ciudad Real "for excesses committed against the Royal Person during the King's stay in Cádiz", being deprived of all his positions, ranks, honors, and decorations, whose dispatches were collected at the end of March 1828. After regaining his freedom, he retired to his hometown of Almendralejo, from where he never left despite having his military positions and decorations reinstated due to the amnesty granted on December 11, 1832, and his rejoining of the Royal Armies in June 1833.

In his mansion, a Baroque work from the 18th century, the romantic poet Espronceda was born in 1808, and today it serves as the headquarters of the Almendralejo Town Hall.
