LAS CANDELAS

On the night of February 1st, the city of Almendralejo surrenders to the fire that drives away evil spirits. The spectacle of seeing the city burning is worthy of being witnessed by all the visitors who come to Almendralejo to enjoy the festival.

In 1970, the CIT (Tourist Information Center) started the "Las Candelas" Festival, which later obtained the declaration of Tourist Interest of Extremadura in 1991.

It is a tradition with ancient Celtic roots, of which there is evidence since the 18th century. On the night of February 1st, the lighting of the fires takes place in different locations throughout the town. At 8 o'clock sharp, the general ringing of the bells announces the lighting of the different candles on this magical night.

Each fire, made up of wood and old junk, is crowned by a "pantaruja" that represents evil. Food and drink stalls are set up around the fires. The main idea is to burn the evil spirits represented by these so-called "pantarujas."

On the following day, February 2nd, the presentation and blessing of the children born in the previous year takes place at the Parish of Our Lady of Purification. In the afternoon, in the same temple, the candles are blessed and a procession is held with the image of Our Lady of Purification, surrounded by children dressed in the traditional attire of Almendralejo, belonging to the Cultural and Folk Association "Tierra de Barros," who carry turtle doves and the large offering cake. Afterwards, a Mass is sung by the Almendralejo Choir.
