ENRIQUE VÁZQUEZ CAMARASA

Enrique Vázquez Camarasa, canon of the Cathedral of Madrid, was appointed by the Republican command to enter the Alcázar on September 11, 1936, following a request agreed upon with the defenders during the presence of Commander Vicente Rojo. The rebel faction rejected the proposal, which aimed to free the hostages located within the fortress in Toledo. Shortly after, he went into exile in France, where he passed away without being able to return to Spain.

He was born in Almendralejo in 1880 and died in Bordeaux in 1946. He studied Humanities at the Seminary of Badajoz and later joined the Pontifical University of Comillas, where he worked as a teacher, as well as at the universities of Badajoz, Astorga, and Madrid.

Alfonso XII appointed him as an honorary chaplain and preacher to the King. He was a renowned speaker and was responsible for delivering funeral prayers in memory of Benedict XV and Antonio Maura. Noteworthy are his lectures on "Freedom of Thought and the Doctrinal Authority of the Church" and "Catholic Morals and National Morals," given at the San Ginés parish in Madrid.

As a personal friend of Indalecio Prieto, he was commissioned by the Republican Government to enter the Alcázar of Toledo during the siege of the Spanish Civil War, in order to speak with Colonel Moscardó. However, he was unsuccessful in securing the release of the women and children held there. Subsequently, due to his political ideas aligned with the Republic, he went into exile in France.
