Its age is 4650 years (III millenium before Christ) according to C14 analysis. It was used as a colective tomb over 1000 years. Are buried 109 people, the bones appear very decayed and all over the tomb but they could perceive four people in fetal position, that it is originally how they were buried.
The tomb is not only considered as one place to bury people, also it has the function to be the place where reside the ancestors and moreover they could receive cult, because ther were considered as mediators of the request that were made to the Gods.
This tomb is oriented in a way that on the shortest day of the year (December 21st) in the dawn of the winter solstice, the sun goes through the corridor flooding the burial chamber in light. This celebration could be motivated by a ceremony hold to offer the light of the new sun to their ancestors.
In 2009 the works for the covering, restoration and musealization of the monument started. Two years later, in 2011, the tomb opened its doors, providing a roofing system for its conservation. Inside the tomb, the tour is carried out in a way so visitants can go through the construction over a perimeter walkway that gives an easy access to them. It also has information panels to make visitants a clear idea of the way of life of our ancestors. People can see the original cavities which were used as a guide in the orientation of the burial chamber and the pools that were used to make the mortar.
Nowadays it can be visited under request in our Tourist Office. When the winter and the summer solstices are, the Tourist department organises guided tours to see the spectacle and enjoy this symbolic monument considered one of the most unique tombs in Extremadura.
