CHALCOLITIC SETTLEMENT OF SAN MARCOS
The ‘Cabezo de San Marcos’ is one of the biggest fortified towns which belonged to Merida, Tierra de Barros and Zafra’s district, with an extension of more than 5 hectares.
This area started in the Copper Age (3,300- 1,800 B.C). Due to the expansion of the villages, people started looking for lands with an agriculture potential. All of a sudden, this settlement was stablished here. It had a circular layout with three lines of dashed walls.On the inside, there were found some tools and utensils, such a stoned windmill with the purpose of grind wheat and acorn.The importance of this ‘Cabezo’ is the defensive structure that it was build up with defensive purposes.
