MERCADO SQUARE

MERCADO SQUARE

Abastos square in downtown

Built in 1928 under the direction of the master builder Luis Barragán Bote and the project of the municipal architect Francisco Vaca, the Market Square is an emblematic monument, characterized by its neo-Mudejar style.

Located in an area previously occupied by haystacks and sileras, it sits on the San José silera, which preserved some silos until they were closed up in the 1950s.

According to the initial project, the building would have a central patio around which the different indoor market stalls would be divided. For access, it was necessary to build stairs and four entrance doors, one on each façade, and decorated in a simple style that combines white and red colors.

Several renovations were carried out, and today it remains a unique and important construction that can be considered another milestone of our artistic heritage.
