THEODOSIO´S MISSORUM

THEODOSIO´S MISSORUM

Missorium of Theodosius I was found near Almendralejo on 25th August 1847 by labourers. Characteristics: - Diameter: 74 cm. - Weight: 15 kg.

Thanks to the 2nd Monsalud Marquis, Juan José Nieto Aguilar, the Missorium was not either sold at a lost or melted, so Almendralejo can enjoy the undowbtlessly best silver jewellery from the late Roman time and an archaelogical document of great value.

The original piece is found at the Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid.

The Missorium of Theodosius was actually a public credential and a personal gift from the Emperor to the Vicarius. It portrays the right moment when the Vicarius took position as the absolute power in certain provinces.

The reverse is damaged without being polished. It also contains the original inscription, the workshop's name and the standard of silver which was used at the time. At the head of it, we can find a bas-relief scene: a four-columns portico crowned on a triangular facade. Under the portico, we can see the main character, Theodosius the Great, the last Roman emperor. On both sides of Theodosius, two other characters at a lower height are shown. They seem to be Honorio and Arcadio Theodosius's sons and coemperors of the Eastern and Western Empires.

Below these characters we can find the Vicarius, who receives the cestificate of his highest representation in Hispania from Theodosius I. At the bottom, Tellus, the Earth's goddess, holds the horn of plenty.
