CONVENT AND CHURCH OF SANTA CLARA
CONVENT AND CHURCH OF SANTA CLARA
The Convent and Church of Santa Clara were founded in 1702. It was built over the house of its founder, Leonor Golfín de Figueroa. Its construction has a baroque style, being considered a reliable trace of the artistic, social, political, and economic period to which the Convent belonged to.
The Convent has undergone several transformations over the years. It had twenty cells, a chapter house, an infirmary, a refectory and two kitchens (one for daily use and a larger one for making convent sweets and cakes). It also had two courtyards, a cemetery and a vegetable garden.
It was built in a single nave with three sections separated by semi-circular arches with a barrel vault, on its head. The main altarpiece has Baroque style and it is distributed in two sections and three streets. The central tribulated niche preserves the Baroque carving of ‘Nuestra Señora del Amparo’, venerated in the Sanctuary of ‘La Piedad’. In 1705 this work was attributed to the circle of Antonio of Madrid. On both sides of the altarpiece, visitors can appreciate the coats of arms of the Golfín Calderón and Golfín de Figueroa families.
Another altarpiece is dedicated to Saint Joseph. A carving from the 18th century and crowned by the coat of arms of the Order of Santiago can also be seen.
It is worth mentioning the choir at the end of the church, as well as the lattice. Behind it, it is the floor from which the cloistered nuns currently attend to mass.
Nowadays the Poor Clare nuns are very much loved in the town and they devote all their affection in the elaboration of handmade sweets, preserving their original receipt and all the magic and the good taste from the past.
In 2014, the Convent of Santa Clara inaugurated the ‘Perpetual Adoration Chapel’, the first in the diocese of Merida - Badajoz, the second in Extremadura and the 34th one in Spain.
